1. Read John 1:1-18. What phrases from this passage describe:

3. Read Luke Chapters 1 and 2. Summarize the events of Jesus’ birth.
4. Read Matthew 3 and use phrases from this passage that describe:
a) John’s message
b) John’s ministry
c) Christ’s ministry
Read verses Matthew 3:13-17 with John 1:29-345. In John 1:29, what does John say about Jesus?
6. What do we learn from Jesus’ baptism about His ministry and purpose?
Read Matthew 4:1-11
7. Who leads Jesus into the desert and for what purpose?
8. List the temptations Jesus faced and how He respond to each.
9. What principles do you learn from Jesus’ temptation that you can practice when you are tempted?
10. Read Hebrews 2:18. How is it to our benefit that Jesus suffered temptation?
11. What promise do we have that gives us hope of victory when we face temptation? See 1 Corinthians 10:13.
Carefully read Matthew 5 – 712. Just as the prophet Moses pronounced covenantal blessings and curses, so in chapter 5 verses 1-12, Jesus, fulfilling the office of prophet (see Deut. 18:18), pronounces the blessings of His kingdom, which is the kingdom of God. Which blessings bring you the most comfort, encouragement, or challenge? Why?
13. What does Jesus claim in Matthew 5:17-18?
14. Using the cross-references in your Bible, look up two or three laws from the books of Moses that correspond to Jesus teaching in Matthew 5-7. How does Jesus uphold the Law, and how does He raise the standard?
15. What part of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew chapters 6 and 7 do you find most challenging?

16. Give examples from these passages that demonstrate Jesus’ authority
a) To forgive sins
b) To call sinners to Himself
c) Over demons
d) Over illness
e) To care for the needs of His followers
17. As you study Jesus’ authority as king, what do you think sets Him apart from earthly kings?
18. Knowing that Jesus has authority over every area of your life, how can you actively entrust your spiritual and physical needs to Him? See also Matthew 6:25-34, Philippians 4:6-7, and 1 Peter 5:7.

19. What different groups of people were involved in Jesus’ crucifixion?
20. Why do you think it is significant that all of humanity be represented in this sin against God? See Romans 1:16, 1 Peter 2:21-24, and 1 Peter 3:18.
21. According to the above verses, what did Jesus accomplish on the cross?
22. How do we receive the benefits of His atoning work? See John 1:12, Acts 2:36, Acts 13:36-39, and Galatians 3:26.
23. Using the following verses, in your own words, describe the meaning of the resurrection. Romans 1:4; 6:5, 1 Corinthians 15:21, Philippians 3:10, 1 Peter 1:3, and 1 Peter 3:21.
24. Read Matthew 28:16-20. a) What parting command does Jesus give to His disciples before His ascension?
b) What is the accompanying promise?
c) How does this promise help you to keep His command?
25. What new insights have you gained this week through your study of Jesus’ person and work?
26. How does this knowledge of Jesus affect your discipleship as you follow the Savior?
