Introduction

Journey Through God’s Word

Why Study the Bible?

1. It is the word of God.

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.         1 Thessalonians 2:13

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21

2. It is spiritual food.

And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Deut. 8:3

Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16

3. It is powerful and effective.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

4. It is the word of life.

Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6:68

And how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:15

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation— 1 Peter 2:2

5. It renews the mind.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Pr. 2:6

6. Discover your own reasons using the following verses. If any other verses come to mind, please use them also.

The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. Psalm 12:6

How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.

Psalm 119:9

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

"You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. Deut. 11:18

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
