"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." Romans 9:33
Read Romans 9:30-10:4
1) What did Israel pursue and why did they fail to attain to it?
2) Read Galatians 2:16; 3:24-25. How does the Law lead to righteousness if one cannot be justified by keeping it?
3) Read Exodus 19:1-6. a) Explain what had God done for Israel and his purpose for them.
b) What role did the law play in making Israel a holy nation?
4) Considering God's relationship with Israel and his purpose for them, why was faith necessary in order to "reach the law"?
5) How is Jesus a stumbling stone for Israel?
6) Not all are offended at Jesus and stumble. What is promised to those who believe?
God's purpose for Israel is fulfilled in the Church. Instead of stumbling over Jesus we stand on him as the rock of our salvation. We are a royal priesthood, a holy nation and a people for God's own possession (1 Peter 5:9). What a glorious position we have in Christ!
7) Israel has stumbled over Jesus and Paul desires their salvation. Though they have stumbled, Paul testifies that they have zeal for God. What does it mean that Israel has zeal without knowledge?
Read Romans 10:5-13
8) Compare Romans 10:5-8 with Deuteronomy 30:11-14. What does Paul's use of Deuteronomy teach us about Jesus' relationship to the law?
9) Read John 1:1,14 and Luke 24:44. What is the relationship between the Word that became flesh and the written word?
10a) What ought to be the role of Scripture in the believer's life?
b) Describe the role God's word plays in your life.
11) What must one believe and confess to be saved (Romans 10:9)?
12) What do you learn from this about the relationship between the heart and the mouth? Also see Matthew 12:34
13) What does your mouth reveal about the condition and the contents of your heart?
14) What glorious promise is given to those who believe and call on the name of the Lord (Romans 10:12-13)?
15a) What new insights have you gained from your study of Romans 9:30-10:13 concerning your purpose and your hope?
b) How does this truth impact your walk with the Lord?
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.... Colossians 3:16
