Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. Romans 7:6

Read Romans 7:1-6
1) To whom is Paul speaking and what point is he making in using the analogy of marriage?

2) What does it mean that we are freed from the law through the body of Christ? See Ephesians 2:13-15.

3) Using the marriage analogy, explain why it is necessary for one to be freed from the law in order to be brought into a new relationship with Christ? See Romans 7:4; 6:5-11.

4) In Ephesians 5:25-33 Paul again uses the marriage analogy to describe the church's union with Christ. What does this passage teach about:
  • Christ's purpose in giving himself up for the church?

  • Christ's care for the church?

5) What does it mean for your life that Christ has such noble purposes for you and cares for you as his own body?

6) According to Romans 7:4, what is the result of our death with Christ and our union with him?

7) Use a Bible dictionary to define "flesh."

8) Describe our state and the fruit we bore while we were living in the flesh (Romans 7:5).

9) "But now" are beautiful words when we consider what we were. But now we are in a new relationship with God. Describe what happens when we die to that which holds us captive (Romans 7:6).

We belong to Christ who has been raised from the dead. We already learned in Romans 6:9 that Jesus will never die because death no longer has dominion over him. This new relationship, this marriage between Christ and the church, will never end. Thanks be to God!

10) With this new relationship and new service come a new covenant and law. What do you learn about this new covenant and law from the following verses?
  • Romans 8:2

  • 2 Corinthians 3:6

  • James 1:25

11) Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17). The law written on stone can not reform the heart, but the Holy Spirit can! Describe your own experience of freedom as the Lord has worked in you to sanctify you.

12) How does freedom in the Spirit enable you in your service to God?

13) How will you use your freedom to serve God? Perhaps it's time to step out in a new service, or maybe just step out with a new attitude. What is God calling you to do today?

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13
