Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Romans 6:14

Thus far in our study of Romans we have learned that Christ set us free from the penalty of sin. Paul now brings us further to show us that Christ also set us free from the power of sin.

Read Romans 6:1-4

1) What rhetorical question does Paul ask in Romans 6:1-2 and how does he answer his question?

2) How is it that we have come to die to sin?

3) Just as we are buried with Christ so also are we raised with him. What more do you learn about dying with Christ through baptism and resurrection from the following verses?
  • Colossians 2:12

  • 1 Peter 3:18-22

Paul tells us in Ephesians 1:19-23 of God's great "power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead." This means that God works in us with Resurrection power! What could be more powerful than that?

Read Romans 6:5-11
4) From verse 5 describe the union we have with Christ and the hope we have because of this union.

5) Paul speaks of our resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 (Read the entire chapter if time allows.) What do you learn from this passage about our resurrection and how will it be like Christ's?

6) Paul says we know that our old self was crucified with Christ. We also know will be united with him in a resurrection like his. What other benefit do we receive from dying with Christ according to Romans 6:6-8?

7) a) We know we have been raised to newness of life in Christ. What does Romans 6:9-10 teach about Christ's death and resurrection?

b) What implications does this have for us if we are buried and raised with Christ?

8) Our participation in Christ's death and resurrection not only gives us eternal hope but has practical implications for how we live today. We have a new identity and a new life. a) How does verse 11 say we must consider ourselves?

b) What difference will it make if we do not consider ourselves dead to sin?

Read Romans 6:12-14
9) What command follows this attitude of death to sin and how does this give you hope for obedience in a sin you may be struggling with?

10) Having died to sin, how are we then to live?

11) We learned in chapter 5 that the law came in to increase the trespass. In Christ we are not under law but under grace. What kind of power does this grace give us? See 2 Corinthians 9:8; 12:9, and Titus 2:11-12.

12) How has your study of Romans this week challenged your thinking, deepened your understanding, or spurred you on to greater heights?

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 1 Cor. 3:17
