...Grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:21
Read Romans 5:12-21 and Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-24
1) From Genesis, tell about Adam's fall and sin's entry into the world.
2) What does Romans 5:12-21 say about sin and death?
3) Romans 5:13 tells us that sin is not counted where there is no law. What law did Adam break and what do you think it means that sin was not counted against those who lived between Adam and Moses?
4) All men are born sinners because we are born into Adam. Use a Bible dictionary to define original sin.
Definition: Reign (Gk. Basileuo, Stong's G935) 1) to be king, to exercise kingly power, to reign 2) metaph. to exercise the highest influence, to control.
5) How do you see original sin and death's reign evident in the world?
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.... John 10:10
6) Romans 5:14 tells us that Adam is a type of Christ. How are Adam and Christ compared or contrasted?
Adam is more than a solitary man, he is representative of all humanity. All men are born into Adam and inherit his nature. But Jesus, the last Adam, did what the first Adam failed to do, he kept the law perfectly and through his obedience on our behalf he undoes Adam's damage. As we are reborn into Christ we are brought out of death into life. We no longer labor under the rule of sin, but are free under the rule of righteousness.
7) Adam is a type of Christ yet his transgression is unlike the free gift (verse 15). How do Adam's trespass and Christ's free gift differ?
8) Read Romans 5:17 with 2 Timothy 2:12 and Revelation 22:5. Explain what it means that we will reign in life.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10
9) We know our future hope of reigning in life with Christ, but how does the principle of reigning in life operate in your life today? (See Galatians 2:20)
10) Read Romans 5:20. a) How does law increase trespass?
b) How does sin cause grace to abound?
11) What do you learn about the reign of grace from Romans 5:21?
12) For more about the grace that leads to eternal life read Titus 2:11-14. What does this passage teach us about:
What an amazing gift God's grace is. No human promise of self-effort can do all this!
13) In which of these areas have you seen God work in your life? What area would you like more grace and what will it mean for your life?
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8. Amen!
