Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God. Romans 4:20
Read Romans 4:13-25
1) In Romans 4:13 what did God promise to Abraham and his descendants? What is this promised based on?
2) Paul has already shown the inability of the law to justify sinners and he now shows the law's inability to guarantee the promises of God. Verses 14-15 explain why the promise cannot be based on law. What do you learn about the Law from these verses?
3) What is transgression? Is all sin transgression? (Compare transgressions with trespasses of verse 25.)Verse 15Transgression: Strong's 3847 parabases disregarding, violating. Verse 25 Tresspasses:Strong's 3900 paratomaa lapse or deviation from truth and uprightness.
4) Returning to God's promise to Abraham in verse 13, Abraham and his descendants are to inherit the world. Verse 17 quotes Genesis 17:5, "I have made you the father of many nations." We know that by faith Gentiles (nations) are spiritual offspring of Abraham. What is the relationship between Abraham being the father of many nations and him and his offspring inheriting the world (Greek kosmos- the sum total of the material universe)? See 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, Hebrews 11:8-16 and Revelation 21:1-8.
5) How does the big picture of God's promise and our inheritance influence your perspective on the things happening in your life today?
6) Read Romans 4:16-22. Use phrases from this passage that describe Abraham's faith. Include references.
7) What did Abraham believe about God? Give references.
8) How was God's power to give life to the dead manifested to Abraham? To Jesus? To us who believe? (See Ephesians 1:19-20)
9) Abraham's faith was placed in God and his word. Do we sometimes misplace our faith? Explain.
10) Why is correct knowledge of God important? (Correct knowledge is based in what God has revealed about himself.)
11) According to Romans 4:23-25, what must we believe about God?
12) Abraham believed hope against hope when all the evidence seemed contrary to God's promise yet he did not waver in distrust. Are there circumstances in your life that seem like obstacles to God's promises being fulfilled?
13) What promises of God do you need to believe God for today? Consider Romans 8:28, Hebrews 13:20-21, or Philippians 4:6-7).
14) As we wait in faith for God to work, the Word of God should inform our prayers. What Scripture should you use as a guide for prayer this week?
As we look forward to our inheritance we live by faith, walk in God's promises, and are being made fit for glory. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 2 Corinthians 1:20
