Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.... Romans 1:16
In our last lesson we looked at who Jesus is. He is the subject of Scripture, the fulfillment of prophecy, and he is the King. He is the Son of God in power and he is our Lord. As Paul begins to address the Roman Christians, he who received grace through Jesus Christ now, through Christ, offers thanks back to God.
Read Romans 1:8-15
1) The Romans' faith was proclaimed in all the world. Why was this such cause for rejoicing on Paul's part?
2) Paul has never visited this church and though he has friends among them, most of the Christians in Rome were unknown to Paul; yet, Paul demonstrates a great love for them. What phrases from this passage reveal Paul's love for these Christians?
3) Paul prayed for the Romans not out of mere affection but out of service to God. What do you learn about prayer from Paul's example and how does this challenge your own prayer life?
4) What do verses 10-12 reveal about the intention of Paul's prayer?
5a) Describe Paul's longing.
b) What do you think he means by "spiritual gift" and "mutually encouraged?" Also see 1 Corinthians 1:5-7 and Ephesians 4:7-16.
6) Paul has been prevented from going to Rome yet he continues to pray for the Romans. No matter what his circumstance, whether he is prevented or imprisoned, Paul remains a faithful servant and a useful vessel. How does his example encourage you in your own service to God?
7) What do you learn about Paul's ministry in Romans 1:14-15?
To Paul the gospel is more than the proclamation of salvation in Christ, it is the entire teaching about Jesus.

8. What does verse 16 say about the gospel?
9) Write words or phrases from the following verses that speak of salvation.
10) Verse 17 tells us that in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed. Use a Bible dictionary to define righteousness.
11) What further insights do you gain from the following verses concerning God's revealed righteousness?
12) In the gospel, the power of God for our salvation, God reveals his righteousness. By faith we are justified (Genesis 15:6) and brought into a right relationship with God. How does the reality of your right standing with God affect:
Just as we are justified by faith so by faith we live our lives in response to what God has done for us for in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith. Habakkuk 2:4 (NASB)
