Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
...But I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. Romans 16:19

Read Romans 16:1-161) For fifteen chapters we have been sitting under Paul's teaching to the church at Rome and now we finally get to meet some of the people he has been writing to. Paul had never been to Rome, yet he had friends there whom he met in his many travels. The first person he mentions is Phoebe. Presumably this servant of the Lord was unknown to the Romans and was also the one (or one among several) who delivered Paul's letter. What does Paul say about this woman and how does he expect the Romans to receive her?

2) Paul sends greetings to many friends among whom are Prisca and Aquila, fellow tent makers he met in Corinth. Read Acts 18 and describe the these saints' participation in Paul's ministry.

3) What additional information do you gain about them from Romans 16?

4) Why do you think the Gentile churches give thanks for Prisca and Aquilla along with Paul?

5) What do you learn from Aquila and Prisca's example about loving and serving the larger body of Christ beyond the borders of our own parishes.

6) Among those Paul lists are Jews (kinsmen), Gentiles, men, and women. Write some of the names and phrases Paul uses to describe these saints.

7) Who stands out or impresses you the most? Why?

8) What do you learn from these saints' examples?

Read Romans 16:17-249) What does Paul warn the Romans against?

10) Why does truth matter and why must we be on guard against false teachers? See 1 John 2:18-27.

11) Paul speaks about the hearts of the naive. What does it mean to be naive and what danger does Paul say is in this?

 12) Contrast naivety with Paul's call to maturity in 1 Corinthians 14:20, Ephesians 4:13, and Hebrews 5:11-14.

13) Instead of naive, what does Paul want us to be?

How our culture works against this! It is no wonder our minds must be renewed (Romans 12:2).
14) In Romans 16:20, what hope does Paul give us concerning Christ's victory?

15) Read Revelation 20:7-10. How do the facts of God's sovereignty and Satan's defeat encourage you in your present circumstances?

Read Romans 16:25-2716) What does Paul say about the gospel in his final words to the Romans?

17) Explain the phrase, "obedience of faith."

18) How have you grown in faith and obedience as you've studied Romans? Thank the Lord for what he has done in your life.

"...You may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth." 1 Timothy 3:15
