Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
May the God of hope fill you will all joy an peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

In this lesson our study continues the theme of loving one another. We are to welcome other believers the way Christ welcomed us so that the body will have unity to the glory of God.

Read Romans 15:1-7

1) Why are the strong obligated to bear with the failings of the weak? For help see 1 Corinthians 8:7-13.

2) Why must we please our neighbor for his good instead of pleasing ourselves?

3) Our issues may differ from the issues of Paul's day, so how can we apply this principle in our own context?

4) How does Jesus bear with our failings? See Hebrews 4:14-16

5) The natural thing is to please ourselves. The supernatural thing is to build others up. How has and how does Jesus build us up?

6) In Romans 15:3 Paul quotes Psalm 69:9 to show that Jesus did not please himself. The Old Testament Scriptures were written for our instruction. What are we to gain from them according to verse 4?

7a) How does knowing that Jesus suffered reproach give us hope?

b) How does knowing God's word give us hope?

8) Paul calls the Lord the God of endurance and and encouragement. How will knowing God this way help us to live in harmony with one another in accord with Jesus Christ?

9) In Romans 15:7, once again, Paul tells us to welcome one another and to do so as Christ has welcomed us. Welcome now takes on the tone of sacrificial love. Who do you need to welcome? Do you know a wounded saint or a weak believer that needs to experience Jesus' love through you?

Read Romans 15:8-1310) Christ became a servant to the circumcised. How did he serve his people Israel?

11) How does Christ's work show God's truthfulness and confirm his promises to the patriarchs? See Genesis 12:1-3, Romans 4:16-17, and 2 Corinthians 1:20.

12) In Romans 15:8-13 Paul quotes several Old Testament passages to show that from the beginning salvation would be for the world, not just Israel. What do you learn from these verses about the purpose of salvation?

13) What benefit do we receive from the power of the Holy Spirit according to Romans 15:13?

14) God wants hopeful, joyous worshipers. What else does the power of the Spirit accomplish in our lives?
  • 2 Corinthians 12:9

  • Ephesians 3:16-19

  • Colossians 1:11

  • 2 Timothy 1:7-8

15) The power of the Holy Spirit accomplishes great things in our lives and enables us to abound in hope. How will having hope in God and for others promote the unity and health of the body?

16) How has the power of God been displayed in your life?

17) What area do you need greater empowering for building others up?

To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for goo an every work of faith by his power. 2 Thessalonians 1:11
