Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ....Romans 13:14

In our last lesson we looked at the Christian's God-given obligation to submit to civil authority and to others. In this lesson we will continue looking at what it means to keep God's law as we live as citizens of heaven.

Read Romans 13:8-10

1) Paul tells us in verse 8 that to love others is to fulfill the law. Read the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1-21 and explain how the law is the outward form of love.

2) We know that in fulfilling the law we must love others from the heart and we can look to Scripture to evaluate the quality of our love. Paul shows us a high standard for godly attitudes towards others in Philippians 2:1-11. What do you learn from this Philippians passage about the attitudes we are to have and why we are to have them?

3) What is your attitude toward others and how can you show them greater preference in imitating Christ?

4) How will our displays of love (through submission, respect, honor and service) be transformed as we grow in humility?

5) (Private) We all need to grow in love and we each face obstacles to loving others (i.e. a critical spirit, a habit of anger, an uncontrolled tongue, etc., etc., etc.). What is God showing you about your own condition and need for his transforming love? Offer it to the Lord in the form of a written prayer.

Read Romans 13:11-146) Paul tells us to wake from sleep. What does he mean by sleep and how are we to wake up?

7) What do the following verses teach about salvation?
  • 1 Peter 1:3-5

  • 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

8) What impliations does salvation's nearness have on how we are to live?

9) Why does Paul uses darkness and night as imagery for our old lives of sin, that which we have been saved (delivered) from?

10) We know that love fulfills the law and if love is at the heart of the law, what is at the heart of the sins of darkness Paul tells us to put off?

11) In Christ we have been transferred from the kingdom of the world to the kingdom of God, from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13). What in your life belongs to the realm of darkness and needs to be cast off?

12) What warnings does Paul give about living a life of sin? See 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:20-21.

13) As well as using night/darkness imagery, Paul also uses daytime imagery. What is daytime and why is it inconsistent with sin?

14) Paul gives us examples of behavior that are improper for the saints and instructs us to walk properly. How are we to do this? It may be helpful to write both the sins Paul mentions and their opposites.

15) In addition to telling us to put off works of darkness, Paul instructs us to put on the armor of light. What does this armor consist of according to 2 Corinthians 6:6-7, Ephesians 6:13-18, and 1 Thessalonians 5:8.

16) Paul's final instruction is to put on Christ and make no provision for the flesh to satisfy its desires. How can you walk in this double command this week? Perhaps the Lord has already been speaking to you about something specific. If not, ask him to show you what he wants to do in your life this week.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12
