Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20
Read Romans 1:18-32
1) Paul gives us the bad news so that we may know our need for the good news. We need the gospel because the wrath of God is revealed. Use a Bible dictionary to define the wrath of God.
2) Using phrases from Romans 1:18-32 describe man's guilt. Be sure to include verse references.
If you're not familiar with it already, read Genesis 2-3. Because God created man in his own image God has a moral and legal claim on all men. Every person ever born has an inherent knowledge of his creator and is subject to God's righteous decrees.
3) According to Romans 1:18-20, what does man know about God and what is man's response to the truth?
4a) In verses 21-23 what do we learn about mankind's response to God?
b) What became of man when he rejected God?
5) Each of us are accountable for what we know and will bear the consequences if we suppress the truth. Is there an area in your life where you're suppressing the truth that sets you free? Perhaps you have a point of resistance to the working of God and you can feel a small rock in your heart. If this is true of you God can work transformation in that area. Like the man who sought Jesus' help you can pray, "I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)
6) If one rejects light there remains only darkness. In verses 24-32 Paul says three times that God gave them up. In each instance why did God give them up and what did he give them up to?
7) Romans 1:24-27 describes people being turned over to homosexual activity but verses 28-32 give a broader picture of what becomes of those who do not see fit to acknowledge God.
a) What does this passage say they are filled with?
b) What does this passage say they are?
8) What is God's righteous judgment on those who practice unrighteousness?
9) But for the gospel we would die for our sin and rightly so. In Christ we are forgiven and come to a whole new way of living in him. In rebellion against God we had only darkened understanding, dishonorable passions, futile thoughts and foolish hearts. Thanks be to God that has changed! What do the following passages teach about our new life in Christ?
10) We certainly were filled with unrighteousness but what hope we now have in Christ! As the above passages have shown us, God has done great things for us and given us great possibilities in Christ. What have you learned of God's goodness toward you that you need to acknowledge to him today?
As we walk in faith we will walk in life, freedom, and the spiritual abundance God provided for us in Christ. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why through him we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 2 Corinthians 1:20
