Living by Faith: A Study in Romans
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God. Romans 1:1

Introduction: The Apostle Paul had long hoped to journey to Rome, not to establish a church there as he did in other cities, but to impart a spiritual gift to this church and be encouraged by them before he continued on to Spain where he would preach the gospel. Paul probably wrote Romans in AD 56, just seven years after the expulsion of Jews from the capitol. By the time of this writing some Jews had already returned to Rome and among them were Priscilla and Aquila whom he met years earlier in Corinth. Because of the previous expulsion of Jews from Rome, the church was predominantly Gentile at this time. For fuller background information you are encouraged to read the introduction to Romans in a Study Bible or Bible dictionary.

If time allows, please read Romans in its entirety before beginning this study.

Read Romans 1:1-7
1) As Paul introduces himself to the Christians at Rome he sets forth his qualifications in verse one. What three things does Paul say about himself?

2) Using a Bible dictionary, define the following words:
  • Servant

  • Apostle

  • Gospel

3) Paul states that the gospel of God was promised beforehand through the prophets in the Holy Scriptures. Paul refers not only to the prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah, but to the whole of Scripture which is prophetic. Let's follow the scarlet thread of salvation as we look now at some of the Old Testament prophecies concerning Christ. Use key phrases from the following verses to record the messianic prophesies. Understand that these examples are just a few out of many.
  • Genesis 3:15

  • Genesis 12:3

  • 2 Samuel 7:16

  • Isaiah 53:4-6

4) Paul points out that Jesus was the son of David according to the flesh. We saw the prophecy of 2 Samuel 7:16 promising David that his throne would be established forever. How do Matthew 1:1-17; 21:9 reveal that Jesus fulfills this prophecy?

5) We know that Jesus is the Son of David, but why do you think that fact is important to New Testament believers?

6) What does Romans 1:4 teach about Jesus' new status gained through his resurrection?

7) What does Ephesians 1:17-23 say about the resurrection and Christ's enthronement?

8) Reading Romans 1:4 with Ephesians 1:17-23, what does it mean for you that Jesus is the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of Holiness?

9) Through the resurrected King of power Paul received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith. What is the obedience of faith? See Ephesians 2:8 and James 2:14 for help.

10) Among whom is Paul to bring about the obedience of faith?

God's word to Abraham is true. Through Abraham all nations are blessed through his descendant Jesus. in Christ we receive all the blessings provided by the gospel.

11) What blessings in Romans 1:7 apply to whose who are called to belong to Christ Jesus?

12) In what area of need or service will these blessings strengthen and encourage you as you believe God's promise to work powerfully in you?

Each of us receives grace to fulfill our calling. Our particular callings differ but we are all called to be saints. To whatever service God has called us, we serve not by our own strength but by the power of God. Our service is his work just as we are his workmanship. Thanks be to God!
