So faith comes through hearing and hearing through the word of Christ Romans 10:17
Read Romans 10:14-17
1) What questions does Paul ask and what answer does he provide?
2) Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah when he says, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!" Read Isaiah 52:7-53:3 and explain how this passage relates to the gospel.
3) Paul says in Romans 10:16 that not all have obeyed the gospel. What does it mean to obey the gospel?
4) We are probably not accustomed to think of the gospel as a sort of command. In Acts 17:22-34 Paul preaches the gospel in Athens. What is Paul's message and what does God command?
5) How does Paul's preaching differ from many gospel messages today? How it it similar?
6) How can you put into practice what you learn from Paul's example of preaching the gospel?
7a) Mere hearing is not enough but what does hearing lead to (verse 17)?
b) How will this knowledge help you to proclaim the word of the Lord?
Read Romans 10:18-21
8) In verse 18 Paul alludes to Psalm 19:4, a verse about general revelation. He applies it to the spread of the gospel yet we know that even today there are people who have not heard the gospel. What do you think Paul means by "all the earth" and "ends of the world?"
9) Paul, steeped in the Old Testament, continues to use the Scriptures in his teaching. This time he borrows from Moses. Read Deuteronomy 32:21. This verse is from the Song of Moses, a passage every Jew would be familiar with. Again Paul asks a rhetorical question, "Did not Israel understand?" Why do you think Israel failed to understand what God stated so plainly?
10) How does God plan to use the Gentiles for the good of Israel?
11) In Romans 10:20 Paul returns to the prophet Isaiah. a) Who are those who found the Lord?
b) How is Israel contrasted to these people in verse 21?
12) That they obstinately refuse him is a terrible thing for God to say about anyone. God continues to hold out his hand to us; how do we respond to him? Are we obstinate and contrary, even if only sometimes, or do we grasp his hand in faith?
13) Contrast the hardness of obstinacy with those who give God pleasure. What qualities from the following psalms please the Lord?
Thanks be to God for he works these qualities into us!
14) The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Obstinacy is only one of the things we are saved from. What other things has God saved you from that you need to thank him for?
15) (Private) What might God now be commanding you to repent of?
We can thank the Lord that he has shown himself to us and given us faith to believe the gospel.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16
