Journey Through God's Word

God Keeps the Covenants
 Skim 2 Chronicles 1-9
1. From chapter 1 use phrases that describe:
a) Solomon's priority of worship

b) The Lord's pleasure in Solomon

2. What do the following passages teach us about wisdom? Proverbs 2:6,7; 9:10; 1 Corinthians 1:30, James 1:5; 3:17

3. Contrast this with worldly wisdom as described in Colossians 2:8, Ephesians 5:6 and James 3:14-16.

4. In what area of your life do you need wisdom from God in order that you might bring that area fully into submission to Christ the King?

5. 2 Chronicles 1:1 says that God was with Solomon and made him exceedingly great. From 2 Chronicles 1-9 list some of Solomon's blessings and things he accomplished as he walked in God-given wisdom.

6. The temple replaced the tabernacle that was built by Moses in the desert. What do Exodus 25:8 and 2 Chronicles 7:16 tell us about the purpose of these structures?

7. What is the New Testament perspective on these structures? See Hebrews 8:5-6 and Colossians 2:17.

8. Carefully read what God says to Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:11-22. Record the corresponding phrases.

    When                                            If                                               Then

9. Describe the spiritual principles you learn from this passage.

Read 1 Kings 11-12
10. Use phrases from chapter 11 showing:
a) Solomon's transgression against the Lord

b) The Lord's dealing with Solomon

11. What does God promise to do for David's sake? (See verses 12-13.)

12. What promises does God give to Jeroboam that are conditioned on him doing what is right in God's eyes?

13. How do these chapters demonstrate both God's covenant faithfulness and his righteous standard?

14. Describe how Rehoboam's folly caused the kingdom to divide (Chapter 12).

15. Ignoring God's word to him, what measures did Jeroboam take to secure the kingdom for himself?

16. Use phrases from 1 Kings 14:7-11 to show God's judgment of Jeroboam (list verses).

17. What lessons do you learn from Solomon and Jeroboam about the importance of valuing and keeping God's Word?

Skim the rest of 1 Kings and 2 Kings
18. As you skim, take note of God's estimation of each monarch. Please notice that the southern kingdom had one dynasty but the northern had many. Record whether each king's character was righteous or unrighteous.

 19. a) How does Judah's history demonstrate God's covenant faithfulness to David? Compare the list Judah's kings with Christ's genealogy in Matthew 1.

b) How does their history demonstrate the people's covenant unfaithfulness to God?

20. Because God is faithful to the covenants He makes with man, what must He bring about after His people have failed to keep the covenant He made with them at Sinai? (See Deuteronomy 28:45-68)

21. In Christ we can rejoice that he mediates a better covenant than the Law. List benefits we have under the New Covenant that enable us to be faithful. See Romans 7:6 and Hebrews 8:8-13, 9:14.
