Journey Through God's Word

In the Promised Land

Skim Joshua
1. For review, see Genesis 15:16 to see what else needs to be fulfilled of God's promise to Abraham.
Just as God judged the nation his people served, so will he judge the nations who currently inhabit the land promised to Israel. During this study, as we see God's harsh judgment on these pagan people, please keep in mind not only their cruelty and immorality, but also the holiness and justice of God against whom they sinned. "For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23).

2. Read Joshua 1 and list God's promises to Joshua as well as his commands.

3. Which command is the condition of a promise?

4. Read 2 Timothy 3:15-17. What other benefits do we derive from Scripture?

5. What has been your attitude toward scripture? Has the Bible seemed irrelevant or full of mere suggestions? Or, have you sought to live out the scriptures in love for the Savior?

Read Joshua chapters 1-6

6. What are the most striking elements of this story?

7. Do you think the outcome would have been different had the people not followed God's instructions?

8. Reread chapter 2 and 6:22-27. Why were Rahab and her family spared? Compare Rahab's story and the scarlet cord to the story of the Passover with the Lamb's blood in Exodus 12. How do you think this story shows us a picture of redemption through Christ's blood (Ephesians 1:7)?

9. In chapter 6 God accomplishes much for his people and begins a long anticipated work. But.... Read chapter 7. Use phrases from this passage (include references) that show:
a) The sin that brought God's anger
b) Post-victory confidencec) Sin's consequence

d) How the sin was dealt with

10. Read Joshua 8:1-29. Once the sin was exposed and dealt with, Israel got a second chance. What was the outcome this time?

11. How is this good news for us who need another chance? See also Lamentations 3:22-23.

12. Read Joshua 24. What phrases show:
a) God's character b) The kind of inheritance Israel received

13. See James 2:5, John 15:10 and Romans 14:17. What do we learn from these verses about the believer's inheritance?

Read Judges 1 and 2

14. a) Give verses from chapters 1 and 2 that show Israel's failure of obedience when they received the land of promise.b) What consequence do they now face? (See 2:3,11-15)

15. a) Skim Judges 3-21. What recurring phrases do you find throughout these chapters?b) What pattern stands out to you?

16. List what you learn from Israel's cycle of sin and deliverance about:
a) God's character

b) Man's condition

17. What warnings do you gain from Judges? What encouragement?

18. Read Judges 17-21. How do  you think the nation's condition of "everyone doing what was right in his own eyes" set the stage for a future king?

19. What similarities can you see between ancient Israel in the time of the judges and our society today more than 3,000 years later?

20. What hope do you find for godly rule in this chaotic age as you read 1 Corinthians 15:25, Philippians 2:9-11, Colossians 1:13 and 2 Timothy 3:16?

21. What part of your life can you bring under Christ's rule this week and so drive out enemies such as fear, doubt, anger, etc.?
