Lesson 6

Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
Inhabiting the Promised Land

And he said, "No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come." and Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, "What does my lord say to his servant?" Joshua 5:14

Joshua 5:13-6:27

Read Joshua 5:13-6:27
1. Israel has miraculously crossed the Jordan River and must now undertake to inhabit the promised land. They must first drive out and destroy its inhabitants in order that the land would be set apart for God and his people in its entirety. Before their conquest begins, Joshua has a divine encounter and receives specific instructions concerning the fall of Jericho. a) Describe the messenger, his position and his instructions.    b) Describe Joshua's response.

2. a) How do you think the knowledge of God's presence and readiness for battle affected Joshua?   b) How does this knowledge help you as you face your own battles? (Remember, as Christians, our battles are really God's battles.)

3. The walls of Jericho will fall not by human might but by the word of the Lord. What was to happen to the city once the wall collapsed? (See verses 17-19.)

4. All that stood between Israel and victory was a wall. God calls us to purity, holiness and freedom. What obstacles in our lives are like the wall of Jericho and seemingly keep us from the victory of freedom in Christ?

5. According to the following verses,a) what is the role of truth in our lives?
  • John 8:31-32

  • 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

   b) what is the importance of obeying God?
  • 1 John 5:2-4

6. How will these truths help you to deal with areas in your life that need to be devoted to destruction (example: pride or an unruly tongue)?

7. God's instructions to Israel do not make earthly sense. For the people to obey them amounts to them believing God for a miracle. Instructions such as, Take up your cross and follow me (Matt. 10:38), might seem foolish to human understanding, but by obedience to the folly of the cross we gain life and freedom. What have you learned about God's good plans for you through your study this week, and how will that truth help you walk in freedom in Christ?
