Lesson 5
Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
Inhabiting the Promised Land
"Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." Joshua 5:9
Joshua 5:1-12
Read Joshua 5:1-12
1. Joshua's first act after crossing the Jordan was to circumcise the generation that had been born in the desert. To learn why circumcision was so important, read the following passages and record what they teach about this rite.
2. According to Genesis 17:14, what was the consequence of failure to be circumcised? 3. Read Joshua 5:6. Why was the previous generation disqualified from entering Canaan? 4. What do we learn from the following New Testament passages about disobedience and its consequences?
5. In Joshua 5:9 God says, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." How is it that circumcision rolls away reproach? Consider it's significance. (See also Deuteronomy 30:6 and Romans 2:28-29.) 6. Read Colossians 2:11-13 and Romans 6:3-4. How is the reproach of Egypt (the world, the old life if sin) rolled away in baptism? As this new generation renews and continues the Abrahamic covenant, they celebrate the Passover. With Passover Israel left Egypt and with Passover they enter the promised land. This reminds us that Christ's work on the cross is foundational to our deliverance from sin and also to the fulfillment of God's promises in our lives. Israel is now provided with the fruit of the land to sustain them. We also, in Christ, are given everything we need for life and godliness. 7. a) What do the following verses say about God's provision for us?
b) How does the knowledge of this provision for godliness help you as you seek to live a godly life in Christ Jesus?
