Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
Inhabiting the Promised Land
Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. Joshua 21:43
Joshua 20 & 21
Read Joshua 20
1. Explain in your own words what a city of refuge is.
2. What do you learn from the city of refuge about God's concern for justice? See also Romans 12:19.
3. How should God's concern for justice affect the way we treat others?
Read Joshua 21
4. You may remember that the tribe of Levi was not to receive their own territory but was to dwell throughout the entire land of Israel. For background Read Numbers 18:6, Numbers 18:20, Deuteronomy 10:8, and explain why God did not give the Levites their own land.
5. Write words or phrases from verses 43-45 that speak of:
6. We almost breath a sigh of relief when we read the words. "And the Lord gave them rest on every side." because our hearts long for rest. To learn about the rest we have in Christ read Hebrews 3:7-4:11.
According to Hebrews
7. If you are in Christ you have entered into rest, yet there still may be areas of unrest where you are not availing yourself of the peace of God by trusting him. Can you discern any such areas?
8. What do you learn from Hebrews 4:11-13 about the role of God's word in examining your life?
9. As we know God's just and merciful character and respond to him in faith we find rest. We do not find the unfulfilled rest of Israel, but the perfect rest of Christ that we can enjoy now and throughout eternity. How can you begin to bring God's peace into your areas of unrest this week?
What hope we have in Christ! When we expose our areas of sin and need to him he will work to bring peace and wholeness. Thanks be to God!
