Lesson 12

Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
Inhabiting the Promised Land

"But the hill country shall be yours, for though it is a forest, you shall clear it and possess it to its farthest borders. For you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron and though they are strong." Joshua 17:18

Joshua 15-19

As you read the descriptions of the tribal territories in these chapters you may find it helpful to consult a map found in a Bible or a Bible dictionary.

1. Read Joshua 15-19 and as you do, write down observations you make such as the repeated use of words and phrases or anything else that impresses you as being significant.

2. Some tribes faced daunting obstacles to possessing their inheritance. What obstacles do the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh face in Joshua 17:18?

Consider the obstacles Ephraim and Manasseh faced in possessing their territory. Perhaps you face obstacles in your walk with God that seem like mountains or iron chariots. Remember, his grace is sufficient for you for his power is made perfect in weakness. No obstacle is too great for God, so pray!

In our last lesson we made the connection between Israel's land inheritance and our spiritual inheritance in Christ as members of his body. We learned that as each part of the body works by God's design, the entire body is built up so that together we will grow up into Christ the head (Ephesians 4:11-16).

Read 1 Corinthians 12
3. What do you learn about the manifestation of the Spirit from verses 1-11?

4. What do you learn about the unity of the body from verses 12-20?

5. What do you learn from verses 21-30 about the dependence of each member on the rest of the body?

6. What confidence do you gain from the knowledge that God has gifted you and placed you in his body according to his will, and how will you use what God has given you to serve him and others?

7. Read Joshua 19:51. Notice the location from which Joshua allotted the land. The tent of meeting was where Israel met with the Lord. God's presence in our lives is essential for fulfilling the calling he's given us. What is a practical way you can make meeting with the Lord a greater priority?

8. How do you think meeting with the Lord regularly will impact your service to him as you dwell in your inheritance?

You might sometimes feel that you just don't have what it takes to really serve God, but be encouraged. His word tells a different story. You may face mountains and iron chariots such as a regrettable past or discouraging circumstances, but God has a plan for you and has given you everything you need to serve him in your calling. He's given you a good land to dwell in!
