Lesson 11

Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
Inhabiting the Promised Land

"I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you." Joshua 13:6

Joshua 13 & 14

At this point in the story, Joshua has served the Lord faithfully for many years. He has kept the Lord's commands and brought Israel into their inheritance. Near the end of his life, however, there remains more work to do.

Read Joshua 13-14

1. What do we learn in Joshua 13:1, about Joshua and the progress Israel made in inhabiting the Promised Land?

2. Joshua 13:2-6 lists the people yet to be driven out. a) What promise does God give Joshua concerning these Canaanites in 13:6?

b) What command does he give?

3. Notice that God gives Joshua a promise, but Joshua for his part must take action (obey) in order for Israel to fully enjoy the land God has given them. The same holds true for us if we are to know the fullness of abundant life in Christ. Why do you think that God wants our involvement as he works in us?

God gave an inheritance of land to his people Israel, and, as we've already learned, he has given believers the inheritance of salvation and everlasting life which is found in Christ. Relating to salvation and life are other promises, all of which find their Yes in Jesus (2 Corinthians 1:20).

4. What do you learn from the following verses about the promises of God believers receive in Christ?
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18

  • Philippians 2:13

  • 2 Thessalonians 1:11

5. Another aspect of our inheritance in Christ is the place and the spiritual gifts he's given us in His body. What do you learn about Christ's body and your place in it from Ephesians 4:11-16?

6. As we read these chapters we saw how the land was apportioned. We learned also how the land is like the body of Christ in that each tribe has its own unique place just like each believer has their own unique place in the body. And, like Israel of old, believers can have trouble driving out Canaanites (sin). Do you have any Canaanites remaining? Is there anything in your life that entangles you or hinders you from growing in Christlikeness? How will you purpose to drive out those Canaanites so you can grow in Christ unhindered?

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
