Lesson 12

Read Mark Learn Bible Studies
To the Praise of His Glory
A Study in Ephesians

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness. Ephesians 6:13

Ephesians 6:10-24

Read Ephesians 6:10-20

1) What does Paul command us verses 10 and 11?

2) Why do we need strength?

3) Considering what you have learned in Ephesians up to this point, what do you think some of the schemes of the devil might be?

4) We are the church militant and we are at war. How does verse 12 describe our battle and our enemy?

5) What more do you learn from the following passages about the enemy?
  • John 10:10

  • 1 Peter 5:8

  • Revelation 12:9-10

6) Because our enemy is actively trying to destroy us we are commanded to take up the whole armor of God so that we can stand firm. The prophet Isaiah also speaks of God's armor. What does Isaiah 59:17 say about this armor? (Hint: take note of who is putting on the armor.)

We are involved in the Lord's battle and put on his very own armor!

7) Let's look at the armor God has provided for us. The first piece mentioned is the belt of truth. How does truth help us in battle?

8) Next Paul mentions the breastplate. What is a breastplate for and why is righteousness our breastplate?

9) What does Paul say about our shoes? We know why shoes are important, but why do we need these particular shoes? See Romans 1:16 for help.

10) What is our shield and why do we need one?

11) Salvation is deliverance from sin and death. Why do you think salvation is our helmet?

12) The one offensive weapon we have is the sword. How does the word of God help us? See Jesus' example in Matthew 4:1-11. Also see Hebrews 4:12.

13a) Finally, Paul comes to prayer. What role does prayer play in warfare and why must we be alert for the purpose of prayer?

b) Why must we pray for the saints?

c) Why does Paul want prayer for himself?

Paul is an excellent example of someone who is wearing the shoes of gospel readiness. The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church (Matt. 16:18) and as the church marches into the world with the gospel souls will be saved and the kingdom of God will advance.

14a) As Paul concludes his letter, sent by the hand of Tychicus, he extends God's love and peace. He also desires that the saints be encouraged in heart. What truths from Ephesians have encouraged your heart?

b) What effect has this encouragement had on your walk with God?

Because of what Christ has done for us we have access to the Father, the love of the son and the empowering of the Spirit. Wearing the armor of God and bearing the good news of the gospel we can now go out to reconcile a broken world to God.
