To the Praise of His Glory
A Study in Ephesians

...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him. Ephesians 1:17

Ephesians 1:15-23

In our last lesson we learned of what God has done for us in Christ "in all wisdom and insight." We learned of our position as sons and of our calling to Christ-likeness. In this lesson we will look beyond our position in Christ to our experience in Christ.
Read Ephesians 1:15-23
1) In verse 15 we see that the Ephesians have faith in the Lord Jesus and love toward all the saints. Why must faith in God and love for others operate together? (See 1 John 5:1)

2) Just like the Ephesians, Paul has God's love for all the saints and it is in this love that he remembers them endlessly in prayer. What is Paul's prayer for these beloved Christians?

3) What will a spirit of wisdom and revelation allow us to know?

4) What insight do you gain from the following passages regarding wisdom and revelation?
  • Wisdom (James 3:17)

  • Revelation (Romans 16:25-26, Ephesians 3:3-5)

5) Paul prays that in having a spirit of wisdom and revelation the Ephesians would know "the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us." He then identifies that power as being the very power of God that raised Jesus from the dead. When we are born again we pass from death to life (John 5:24) and that same resurrection power continues to work in us to conform us to the Son. What do the following verses teach about the display of resurrection power in our lives?
  • Romans 6:13

  • 1 Peter 2:24

  • Colossians 1:28-29

6) Compare Ephesians 1:20-23 with 1 Corinthians 15:20-28. What does Paul teach about:
  • the position and authority of Christ?

  • the reign of Christ?

  • rulers, authorities and powers?

All of this is to the church, Christ's body and his fullness. This is an incredible and lofty truth. It is no wonder that Paul prays for the Ephesians as he does. Apart from God giving us a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of himself we could not even hope to understand these mysteries.

7) As you've studied this passage how have the truths of Ephesians 1:15-23 affected your
  • prayers?

  • hopes?

  • your perspective on your life's circumstances?

For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him who is the head of all rule and authority. Colossians 2:9-10
